ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Part of the act requires the presence of these signs for making the lives of disabled Americans a bit more convenient. There are several aspects that ADA signs must have to be considered compliant. They must be set on a reflective background to make easier reading possible for the visually impaired. High letter and background contrast is required as well. Raised lettering is often beneficial to increase readability from far away. Braille must be on ADA signs so blind members of society can benefit from the presence of the sign.

Many ADA signs, especially those indicating wheelchair accesses to somewhere, will depict an image, in this case of a wheelchair-bound individual in pictogram form. The standard men and women's restroom signs have pictogram forms of both genders so people who do not speak English or cannot read can decipher the meaning of the signs. The image on a sign near an elevator of a person using the stairs in case of a fire is another image example present on ADA-compliant signs. The pictures on ADA signs need to be six inches tall, have a clear tactile character and relay the message in Braille as well.

More specifications go into the placement of ADA signs. They must be 60 inches above the finished floor and accessible to within three inches of the one reading the sign. What is the purpose of Braille if a blind reader cannot physically touch the sign? By meeting all of these compliances, you will be following the laws when implementing the ADA signs in your building. It is important to note that since drivers cannot be blind or require specific access due to wheelchair restrictions, road signs do not need to be ADA compliant.
